March was a fun month in the Reading Center as we read stories by Dr. Seuss.  We enjoyed well-known stories by Dr. Seuss and some stories that I’m certain were new to several students.  We did many activities to go with the stories and even made some Oobleck!  I look forward to Dr. Seuss month each year and I hope that the kids enjoyed our time together as much as I did.

As we move into April, we are learning about Tall Tales and Fables.  Grades 2-5 are learning the features of a tall tale.  We will enjoy stories about John Henry, Pecos Bill, Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyon.  We will explore the language of these stories and discuss the concept of exaggeration.  We will also explore the uniqueness of these characters and each story’s setting.  In Kindergarten and First Grade the students will be learning about fables.  These stories are often short and very enjoyable for young learners.  We will focus mainly on Aesop’s fables, but will also enjoy some stories about Anansi the Spider.  Fables have many features that make them unique, but our focus will be on the “moral” to each story.

Once we return from Spring Break, we are in the home stretch for summer.  Please look for any books that may be hiding on the shelves of your home. Also, ask your child if they have any books that need to be returned.  I will send home notices to any students with books missing.  Have a safe and Happy Spring Break!!
