Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas Break!

In the month of December, we enjoyed some wonderful Christmas stories!  We explored our state with Santa and learned about two wonderful legends associated with the Christmas Season:  The Legend of the Poinsettia and The Legend of the Candy Cane.  These beautiful stories helped in reminding us that Christmas is a time to adore our greatest gift from God…. Jesus!

As we move into January, we will be focusing on nonfiction books.  We will start by understanding the difference between fiction and nonfiction by making comparisons.  We will do some fun research using nonfiction magazines (National Geographic: KIDS) and share some of our findings.  We will also learn about the nonfiction section of the library and that it is sorted by the Dewey Decimal System.  Nonfiction books often have features that other books do not.  These features include a Table of Contents, a Glossary, an Index, captions, maps, graphs and others.  We will be introduced to these features as we learn that wonderful knowledge can be gained by using the nonficiton section of the library.

I am noticing that many books are being checked out of the library and not being returned.  Please ask your child if they are returning their books in a timely manner.  Also, continue to have conversations with your child about what they are reading.  I often find that if I ask them a few questions about their books they are happy to tell me all about it!  This helps with their recall abilities and verbal skills as well.  Plus, its just fun to hear about!

I hope the month of January is a good one for all!  Stay Warm!
