Happy New Year!!

What a busy December we had preparing for the Christmas Program! Students in grades 1-3 prepared a beautiful program that left us feeling so much joy and happiness to start our holiday season! The other students in the school learned standard Christmas carols and where they came from leaving them to go home and keep singing!

We are going to ‘Roar in to the 20’s’ with some Jazz music starting with Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, to name a few. We will also listen to the first silent films music. Each class will have their own set of goals that go along with this theme and their own concepts that they will continue to learn and new concepts as well!

In Preschool students are going to listen and water color paint to Jazz music, my personal favorites are the Jazz renditions of classic Disney tunes! We will listen for the jazz instruments such as trumpet, trombone, tuba, and percussion.

In Kindergarten students will learn the Jazz instruments and continue working on lines and spaces with added notation. Whole note,Quarter note, eighth note and quarter rest exposure. We will use a Near Pod activity using the iPad to work along with partners and as a class to identify note names

In 1st-3rd grade we will study the Jazz composers and use simple chanted circle games to feel syncopated rhythms, such as “Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?” We will also continue to review lines and spaces, and note values.

In 4th and 5th grade we will be preparing for 2020 Day of Giving performance that will be held on Wednesday, January, 29th. We will sing 15 minutes worth of music one being Jazz themed, WV themed, gift giving, light giving, and hope bearing! I don’t want to give away too many details just as to say that it will be something you don’t want to miss! We will work hard over these next couple of weeks preparing!

As always each class 1-5 grade will continue to prepare for Mass and we will come together to celebrate our All Schools Mass for Catholic Schools Week on January 31st!

All the best,

Mrs. Haas
