November was an enjoyable month in the Reading Center.  We discussed the genre of Historical Fiction and read many interesting books.  The week before Thanksgiving we discussed the things we are thankful for and we read a book called Thank You, Sarah.  This book told us how Thanksgiving became a national holiday!

In the month of December, we will read Christmas books.  We will only have three weeks so we are going to try to squeeze several fun books into our time together.  We will be reading Mountain Christmas by Marc Harshman.  Harshman is a popular West Virginia children’s author whom several of the teachers on our faculty met during our time in Morgantown in early October.  We will also be reading The Gingerbread Man, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Polar Express and The Legend of the Poinsettia.  With the stories, many students will make a gingerbread man glyph.  We will also discuss important features of the text such at setting, purpose and characters.  Students will have the opportunity to work together and share ideas about the lessons in the stories.

Please ask your child frequently about what they are reading.  Also, please encourage them to bring back checked out books in a timely manner.  I hope that all Sacred Heart families have a wonderful Christmas season!
