We have been enjoying our time together in the Reading Center!  In the month of September, we focused on strong characters in story books.  A few of the books we read were based on true stories so we were able to discuss ways that we could learn from the characters when they faced adversity.  We also read some books in which the main characters had fun-loving, exciting personalities.  The students were able to draw wonderful ideas and thoughts from these stories.

In the month of October, we will be focusing on stories written by Cynthia Rylant, a beloved West Virginia author.  We will read stories such as When the Relatives Came, When I was Young in the Mountains, and The Bookshop Dog.  We will also enjoy Henry and Mudge as well as Mr. Putter and Tabby.  We will discuss the different things we enjoy about living in West Virginia, as Rylant did in some of her writings, and we will illustrate some fun pictures!  We will also focus on identifying the Beginning, Middle and End of a story.  Cynthia Rylant has written many books!  I am excited to introduce many of her works to the students.   At the end of the month we will keep a fun Reading Center tradition alive and listen to some scary stories in celebration of Halloween!

Please remember to ask your child about the books they have checked out of the Reading Center and encourage them to return the books on time.  Also, please ask them about their reading goals and talk about the books that they like the most!  With your involvement, the students will become more and more excited about picking up books that they like to read!
